The Airedale comes from the West Riding of Yorkshire, England, where working people crossbred the Welsh Terrier and the Otterhound in the 19th century to hunt the large rats that lived along the River Aire. Watching Airedale Terriers hunt and capture their prey became a popular pastime. Airedale Terriers were used extensively as messenger dogs during World War I, as they were known for delivering their messages despite injury.
