The Italian Mastiff, or Cane Corso, descends from the canis pugnax, which was the Roman war dog. The Italian Mastiff was used to hunt boar and wild cattle, as well as being guard dogs and watch dogs. Italian Mastiffs were once common throughout Italy, but their numbers declined as the number of farmers decreased. Since the 1970s, there has been a dedicated revival of the breed.
