The Papillon, or Continental Toy Spaniel, is named for the butterfly-like shape of its ears, as papillon means ‘butterfly’ in French. A Papillon with dropped ears is called a Phalene, which is French for ‘moth’. In non-English-speaking countries, the Papillon is usually named in reference to squirrels instead of butterflies. The Papillon can be seen in works of art dating back to the 16th century, as it was a favorite dog of Renaissance nobility.
