The Portuguese Water Dog, or Cao de Agua, was traditionally a fishermen’s dog, and was used both to herd fish into nets, and to perform water rescues. The breed was in danger of extinction in the 1930s, but was saved by a conscientious shipping magnate who bred fishermen’s dogs. The Portuguese Water Dog has become well-known in the United States as the favorite dog breed of President Barack Obama.
