The Rottweiler descends from Ancient Roman cattle herding dogs. The Romans brought their dogs into Germany, and the town of Rottweil became associated with the breed. In Germany, the Rottweiler was a butcher’s dog, guarding and pulling carts of meat. Rottweilers fell out of demand after the Industrial Revolution, but came back into favor as police dogs during the buildup toward World War I.
