The earliest record of the St. Bernard is in 1707, from monks at the Great St Bernard Pass in Switzerland. St. Bernards were farm dogs, but achieved international notoriety as search and rescue dogs. The monks did not train the St. Bernards, instead, older dogs taught younger dogs how to rescue trapped alpinists. Due to their heroism, the St. Bernard became the national dog of Switzerland.
