The Jack Russell Terrier originated in 19th century England, where the Reverend Jack Russell wanted to breed a small white terrier specifically for fox hunting, as the small terriers of his day were red and could be confused for the foxes. The Jack Russell Terrier was bred to be aggressive enough to chase foxes, but not aggressive enough to physically harm them, as that was considered unsportsmanlike. As the popularity of fox hunting decreased, Jack Russell Terriers are used less for hunting, but are very popular animal actors.
