The Whippet, or Snap Dog, is descended from the Greyhound, as Greyhounds who were too small to hunt stag were given to the peasantry, who used them to hunt rats and small game. Eventually, the Whippet became a separate breed, likely in the 18th century. Whippets were also used as racing dogs. When they are not running, they are very calm, and make excellent lap dogs.
